NHS issues warning on heatwave
Senior health officials in Northamptonshire have issued a serious warning about the dangers of excess sun because of the heatwave.
Temperatures are expected to soar again today up to a possible 32C and NHS Northamptonshire has responded to the Department of Health level 3 heatwave alert by reminding key health professionals of the actions they should now take under the national heatwave plan to help minimise the risks associated with unusually high temperatures.
The county is set to bask in the current heatwave for another 48 hours at least, and sunseekers have been warned that extreme heat can seriously damage your health.
Sharon Benford, emergency planning lead for NHS Northamptonshire, said: "During a heatwave, when temperatures stay really high day after day, it can sometimes be fatal, particularly in high risk groups such as children or pensioners.
"In a severe heatwave you may get dehydrated and your body may overheat. If you already have a heart or respiratory problem, this may make your symptoms worse.
"We are in communication with our partners to ensure that the roles and responsibilities outlined in the Department of Health heatwave plan for alert level 3 are undertaken.
"Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for the old, the very young and those with long-term or chronic medical conditions. There are a number of things that people can do to stay comfortable and safe during periods of excessive heat."
People have been urged to stay inside during the peak hours of the heatwave, 11am to 3pm, and to avoid strenuous activity while ensuring they drink water or fruit juice regularly to avoid dehydrating.
Anyone who feels unwell during the heatwave can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
