New plan is revealed for old leather works
New plans have been revealed for the redevelopment of a landmark Northampton leather factory.
In 2007, members of the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) approved plans to redevelop the former Pearce leather works in Wellingborough Road.
As well as the restoration of the listed former factory buildings, the development would also have seen the construction of 149 houses in the grounds around the factory. But latest plans for the site would see only 126 houses built nearby.
In documents which have been submitted to the WNDC, developers Lagan Homes said the new houses would have a 1930s' feel to complement the art-deco style of the main factory building.
The company's report added: "The factory buildings have been disused for some time and it was felt that these buildings should be sensitively refurbished.
"Both the buildings have a strong art-deco style and therefore any buildings proposed to be in their immediate vicinity would also require some sensitive design."
Under the scheme, the factory's former offices would be retained, while part of the old factory would be demolished. The factory's power house would also be converted into six flats while some of the factory's former buildings would be left for business use.
The Pearce Leatherworks was founded in 1908. The company dyed leather for shoes, handbags and watch straps and exported goods all over the world.
The factory closed in 2001 amid growing competition from overseas.
The WNDC will make a decision on the latest plans for the site later in the year.
