A planned move to Northampton’s Enterprise Zone by one of the town’s largest employers is now not going ahead, it has been revealed.

Nationwide announced in June last year that it might move from its head office in Moulton Park to be nearer the town centre. But on Monday morning, the 2,100 staff employed at the site were told that the move was no longer going ahead.

Instead the firm announced that the offices would undergo an extensive refurbishment programme estimated at more than £20 million over the next five years.

A spokeswoman for the company, which has been at the site since 1987, said the decision not to move to the Enterprise Zone was based on the capacity potential of the current site and the cost of refurbishment compared to the cost of relocation.

“Northampton is strategically very important and we looked at what services we wanted to provide in the Northampton in the future,” she said.

“The current site at Moulton Park will allow us to expand and meet our requirements.

“The announcement that Nationwide will carry out an extensive refurbishment of the exisiting headquarters in Moulton Park is good news for the staff working there,” she added.

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council welcomed the announcement, saying: “It is great news that one of our town’s iconic employers has announced they will be staying in Northampton. Nationwide will be investing millions in improving and upgrading their existing facilities, and this can only be good for our town.

“We were aware that Nationwide were considering a number of options, including relocating to our Enterprise Zone. And, following this announcement we will be talking with other parties who have also expressed interest in the site Nationwide had been looking at.”
