Mystery surrounds the removal of the head from an iconic seven foot cockerel outside a garden centre in Towcester.

Rocky, the pink cockerel, has stood outside the Bell Plantation Centre for the past year and is a highly visible landmark for drivers off the A5/A43 roundabout.

Freddie Warren, sales and marketing manager at the centre, said staff had been left mystified after the cockerel’s head was removed and placed behind its feet.

Mr Warren said: “It is a bit of a mystery we think it may have been due to the cold or vandalism that it fell off.

“When it was first delivered the head fell off as it was being unloaded off the lorry so we welded it back on.

“It was a cold night that it happened so I think that was the cause but other people think it may have been hit with a sledgehammer.”

Mr Warren said staff were planning to weld the cockerel’s head back on in the near future.
