MPs' expenses will be a hot topic of debate
The MPs' expenses scandal is expected to be a hot topic of debate at a Question Time-style meeting at The University of Northampton tonight.
Staff, students and town residents will get the opportunity to quiz five of the candidates for the Northampton North seat during the pubic debate in the Holdenby Building in Park Campus, starting at 6pm
The event has been organised by the student debating society and has the support of Ann Tate, vice chancellor of the university, who will be opening the meeting.
Anyone from Northampton is welcome to attend the free event which will feature Labour MP for Northampton North Sally Keeble, sitting alongside four prospective parliamentary candidates Michael Ellis (Cons), Andrew Simpson (Lib Dem), Tony Lochmuller (Green) and Jim MacArthur (UKIP).
A member of the Debating Society will be acting in the role of David Dimbleby, as chairman. Roxanne Dean, the debating societies' public relations officer, said: "We wanted to include the people of Northampton in this event, as there is no doubt that the expenses scandal has alienated many.
"We wanted to provide an opportunity for members of the public, as well as students, to engage with their local politicians and to get to know the candidates running for the Northampton North seat so that they can make an informed decision when it is time to vote."
Following the questioning of the candidates, there will be a cheese and wine reception provided by Waitrose, with an opportunity to meet the panellists. There will also be a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses. All funds will be used by the debating society to enter competitions and organise similar events in the future.
