MP wants action over danger road
A dangerous Northamptonshire road on which two people have died in road accidents needs urgent traffic calming to avoid more deaths, an MP has said.
The road which links Wootton to the village of Hartwell has seen two fatalities in recent years and the latest in a long string of serious car accidents on the route happened last month.
Brian Binley, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, has been lobbied by concerned villagers who live near the route and is now calling for urgent action to be taken by Northamptonshire County Councillors. He said: "As recently as June 1, there was yet another accident.
"This is another example proving that the Wootton to Hartwell Road is extremely dangerous.
"It is obvious there is a real need to review what action might be taken to slow down traffic and improve the road from a safety perspective.
"We need to act now to save lives or the situation will only get worse."
Stephen O'Riordan, aged 50, died of his injuries at Northampton General Hospital after he was hit by a Ford Sierra in Hartwell Road, Quinton, in March. Quinton Parish Council said at the time that it had tried to introduce traffic calming measures over that stretch of road for a number of years, but with limited success.
And 64-year-old grandmother Marlene Broadbent was killed in 2007 in a head-on collision just metres away in Wootton Road.
Mr Binley said he wants to see improved signage, increased police patrols, the possibility of using mobile cameras at accident hotspots, and if necessary, road engineering.
The call follows representations from Quinton Parish Council to Mr Binley.
It believes the very narrow road is used as a rat-run to Milton Keynes by lorries and commuters.
Mr Binley has written to the deputy county roads boss, Councillor Michael Clarke (Con, Hackleton) asking him and the council to look into the problems and to take the necessary action.
Cabinet member for roads Heather Smith (Con, Prebendal) said: "If there's an issue with serious accidents involving injuries, and particularly deaths, I can assure you we will look into it."
