MP blasts cut-price booze offer
One of Northampton's top politicians has blasted nightclub bosses for promoting a twice-weekly all-you-can-drink student night, branding their actions "disgraceful".
Sally Keeble, Labour's MP for Northampton North, made the comments about a 7.99 all-you-can-drink student night running every Monday and Wednesday at Groove in Gold Street, Northampton.
The night is promoted with the tagline: "Get yourself on the guestlist, get in for only 7.99 and drink as much as you like!"
Mrs Keeble, who has been campaigning for a minimum price for alcohol units for a number of years, said she planned to speak to nightclub bosses about the promotion.
She said: "It's completely cynical, targeting the most vulnerable section of the market, which is young people who may be away from home, unsupervised, for the first time. It's completely disgraceful.
"If they continue with this, everyone else has to undercut them to compete and before we know it there will be nights like this every night where people can get blind drunk in Northampton for a minimum price, which is not good news for the town centre."
Experts from Drinkaware, the safe drinking campaigners, also criticised the nightclub, which uses the line "Groove promotes responsible drinking, for more info visit www.drinkaware.co.uk" in its promotion.
Chris Sorek, chief executive of the campaign, said: "While promoting responsible drinking is incredibly important, doing it in conjunction with a 7.99 'all you can drink' promotional offer is completely contradictory.
"We will contact Groove to ensure reference to our website is removed from any future promotion of this kind."
