Mountaineer Alan Hinkes reaches a peak in Northamptonshire

A world famous mountaineer has tackled one of the smallest peaks in his career in Northamptonshire as part of his latest challenge.

Alan Hinkes OBE was in the county yesterday as part of his quest to tackle the highest point in 39 counties in England in a week.

Having conquered Mount Everest and several other monster peaks, little Arbury Hill, near Daventry at 225 metres, was no problem.

However the Yorshireman was adamant he gained some satisfaction from the experience.

He said: "I did a night-time ascent and it was lovely actually.

"The hill was an iron age fort and you could see why iron age man wanted to live up there.

"I bimbled up to the top in about quarter of an hour but I stood looking up at the stars for another 15 minutes.

"It wasn't a particularly gnarly hill like you get in Cumbria - the worst were some rabbit holes I nearly tripped over in the dark - but I did enjoy myself."

Undeterred by a life-threatening avalanche earlier this year, Mr Hinkes, accompanied by a driver, is taking on the challenge to raise awareness for Mountain Rescue.

He said: "People don't realise how often Mountain Rescue is called out. They're even called out when there's floods or train crashes.

"I've been involved in a few rescues myself and have friends who are in Mountain Rescue and I know they are volunteers but also dedicated professionals."

He is continuing on his mission by climbing Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire, Worcs Beacon in Worcestershire, Black Mountain in Herefordshire and Brown Clee Hill in Shropshire before continuing his trek across England.
