Medieval pottery found in car park

Fragments of medieval pottery have been found buried underneath a Northamptonshire car park.

Archaeologists working on the site, in the centre of Daventry, found pottery shards which are believed to be up to 900 years old.

Archaeologist Peter Cox said: "We've found about half a dozen bits of medieval pottery at the rear of the library that date back to the 12th or 13th century, which has been positively identified by an expert.

"It's not unexpected because we knew that the town was occupied at that date, and we are hopeful we still might find something else."

The digs have been taking place for the past few weeks in Primrose Hill, High Street and Chapel Lane in Daventry.

Work is being carried out at the site as there are plans to redevelop that area of the town centre.

The plans would see a new library and retail complex built to the north of High Street.

The archaeological digs form part of investigation work which needs to be carried out by the developer before a planning application is submitted for the site.
