Massive lottery cash boost for play equipment in Northampton
Play equipment for children across Northampton will receive a boost thanks to a massive £455,000 windfall from the lottery.
Northampton Borough Council has been given 455,000 by the Big Lottery Fund to improve facilities for children in the town.
The scheme will see play equipment across Northampton improved and a series of play sessions set up for children.
The authority's cabinet member for leisure, Councillor Brendan Glynane (Lib Dem, Delapre) said: "Play is an essential part in children and young people's lives.
"Through play children and young people start to develop important social and learning skills as they meet with others and explore their environment.
"This grant will allow us to improve children's access to free play across Northampton.
"We'll also be looking at setting up a number of projects which will offer young people more opportunities to take part in events and activities which promote play, health and well being."
Among projects the council will use the lottery cash for are after-school facilities for children with special needs, free play sessions for children during the school holidays, one-off play days for children and better play equipment .
The leader of the authority, Councillor Tony Woods (Lid Dem, St David's) welcomed the new money, saying it would play a big part in improving children's lives.
During a meeting of the borough council's cabinet last night, he said: "This really should make a huge difference to our town and I think it's a very good bit of news."
Every year the Big Lottery Fund gives out millions of pounds from the National Lottery to good causes.
The money goes to community groups and projects which improve health, education and the environment.
The money given to Northampton Borough Council was part of almost 1 million donated to improve play facilities across the East Midlands.
