Manchester United heroes to take on Daventry Town in game refereed by Northamptonshire MP
Dennis Irwin
LEGENDARY names from Manchester United will come under the scrutiny of one of Northamptonshire’s top politicians when they appear in the county later this year.
The MP for Daventry, Chris Heaton-Harris, has been chosen to referee a charity match between Daventry Town Reds and Man Utd Legends.
Mr Heaton-Harris, who is a qualified referee, said: “It’s a great game to be involved in.
“It will be fantastic to be on the same pitch as the Manchester United Legends and I hope a lot of people will come down on the day and support the club and the charities the event is raising money for.”
Players who will appear in the Manchester United team include former Republic of Ireland international, Dennis Irwin, “Busby Babe” Sammy McIlroy, and Frank Stapleton, who made 223 appearances for Manchester United.
The game will be held at Daventry Town’s ground at Communications Park in Browns Road, Daventry on May 20.
The home team will be made up of people from across Daventry and Northampton who have raised sponsorship money to take part in the game.
And to help boost the sponsorship rates, the players have been told the four who raise the most money will play for the Manchester United side.
Among those on the Daventry team will be the leader of Daventry District Council, Councillor Chris Millar (Con, Brixworth).
The 58-year-old is expected to play one 35-minute half against the ex-professionals.
He said: “I’ve got a bad leg and bad knees, but I used to play quite a lot when I was young, so it should be fun.
“And I’ve been a Manchester United fan all my life, so playing against people like Dennis Irwin will be amazing.”
The charity match has been organised by the commercial manager of Daventry Town, Terry O’Neill.
He said: “It should be a fantastic day and we hope we’ll raise a lot of money for charity.
“It’s a difficult time for everybody, but I think events like this make everybody come together.”
The game will raise cash for a number of charities as well as money to improve Daventry Town’s facilities.
Tickets can be bought from the Go Mobile shop in Abington Street, Northampton for £5.
