Man hid hammers in trousers

An unemployed man was arrested for shoplifting after walking out of a Northampton DIY store with five hammers hidden in his trousers.

Richard Horne, aged 31, stole the hammers while he was in B&Q, in Towcester Road, on June 13.

Northampton Magistrates' Court heard how a security guard watched on CCTV as Horne selected the tools from a shelf and put them in his basket.

"He walked out of the shop, making no attempt to pay for anything.

"When he was stopped outside, five hammers were recovered from the waistband of his trousers."

Magistrates heard he had run out of benefits cash and was hoping to sell the hammers because he believed it would be easy to do so.

Horne, who admitted the offence, was given a 12-month conditional discharge.
