Magician Paul Daniels to show tricks of the trade in village hall gig

World famous magician Paul Daniels is coming to Northamptonshire to play at a village community centre with a maximum capacity of 200 people.

The 71-year-old will be performing a two-hour show in Long Buckby on Saturday night as part of a long-running tour of small regional venues, which will also see him visit Pattishall Parish Hall, near Towcester, at the end of April.

The 1983 Magician of the Year said that, despite the smaller size of the venues, he enjoyed the greater opportunity for audience interaction.

He said: "I find the village shows more fun as if you make a joke about someone in the audience then everybody knows him. There is a much more fun and party atmosphere.

"I've heard that a lot of people in Long Buckby don't think it is me, they think it is someone who is going to turn up and pretend to be me. It is only when they see it in the local media that they realise it is actually me."

"It will be a very funny, good night which will be pretty much unlike anything you have seen before."

The magician, who has been married to his long-time assistant Debbie McGee since 1988, said much of the show was improvised during a question and answer session.

He said: "People who come to my show are always surprised at how funny it is.

"Every arena requires a different performance. I have worked in large comedy clubs and theatres and in tiny street theatres in Germany, and each demands a different set."

Despite being in the entertainment industry for more than 40 years, the star said he had no plans to hang up his magic wand in the near future.

"I came into performing magic after working in local government and liked the variety it offered me.

"I like keeping busy. My mother keeps saying to me that I need to ease up a bit but she is 94 and still does her housework."

The show starts at 7.30pm this Saturday. Tickets, priced 10 and 20, are available from Buckby Newsagents.
