Losing 16 stone on crash diet saves Phil from diabetes

A super slimmer from Northampton who lost 16 stone in less than a year is crediting his diet for saving him from diabetes.

Phil Griffin, from Far Cotton, weighed 30 stone in 2008 and had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity.

Keen golfer Phil tried to lose weight so he could keep up with friends on the course on an upcoming holiday but doctors believe it ended up curing his diabetes.

The 56-year-old put himself on a diet of powdered food packs and snack bars and he lost 10 stone in only five months.

His weight-loss was so fast his blood pressure was back to normal within only a few weeks and his diabetes disappeared within eight months.

He said: "My doctor couldn't believe it, they said I had the heart rate of a teenager."

Although the LighterLife programme Mr Griffin followed is an extreme form of dieting, doctors say that getting down to a healthy weight through eating and exercising regularly reduces the risks of diabetes.

Mr Griffin was so big he would give up partway through golf games through exhaustion but when he sat down his ankles would set and he would be unable to stand.

In Mr Griffin's case, it took 20 years for the once solid, 18-stone rugby player to reach a flabby 30 stones.

He said: "It was the upset by my family having to move away from the local area - I comfort ate.

"When I used to drive from Northampton to Worcester to see my grandkids, I would have to stop overnight because I was so tired.

"Now it's just a day trip.

"My seven-year-old grandson is not happy that I can now catch him when I chase him.

"But he is delighted that I can now take him on all the rides at theme parks."
