More than 2,000 people in Northampton were caught watching television without a licence in 2012 - an increase of almost 20 per cent on the year before.

TV Licensing officials today revealed they recorded an increase in the number of people who tried to dodge buying a television licence between January 2012 and January this year.

In Daventry, 220 dodgers were caught out, while more than 630 people were caught in Corby, more than 630 in Wellingborough and more than 520 in Kettering.

The average evasion rate across the country remains at a low of just over five per cent.
