Library closes for transformation

Northampton's Central Library is closing down for a month so improvements worth £180,000 can be carried out.

Northamptonshire County Council has announced the library will shut on Tuesday and not re-open until May 5.

Work will be carried out at the building, which is in the centre of Abington Street, to create a new cafe in the library as well as a new castle-themed children's library and a health and well-being area.

Council cabinet member for commercial operations, Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, said: "This will bring the library bang up-to-date, with new areas dedicated to the different people who use the library and give residents more choice in the way they contact the county council."

The authority hopes the improvements at the library will increase the current number of users from 450,000 a year to a million.

Councillor de Savage added: "As well as borrowing books, CDs and DVDs or researching their local history, visitors to the redesigned library will be able to learn about county council services, get health and wellbeing advice or take part in the various fun activities planned for the library. We are certain that the transformed Central Library will become even more of a key landmark in the town centre, an essential port of call for residents visiting Northampton."

The library will close at 7pm on Tuesday, March 31 and re-open on Tuesday, May 5.

The library has already been issuing extended loans to cover the closure period.

During the closure people can still make enquiries about library services by emailing enquiredirect@northamptonshire.gov.uk or calling the council on Northampton 462049.
