Landlords in search for 'Best Bar None'
A search will be launched today to find the best pub in Northampton, with landlords judged on their ability to pull the perfect pint while ensuring the safety of their regulars.
The Best Bar None campaign will be launching the search to help reward venues that go the extra mile to show they are well-managed and take customer safety and the prevention of crime and disorder seriously.
The scheme was first launched three years ago and local authorities have now decided to bring it back following growing concerns about violent, drink-fuelled disorder in town centre pubs and bars.
The campaign has been backed by the 155 members of Northampton's PubWatch network and chairman Neil Bartholomey said: "Best Bar None gives licensees the opportunity to look at their procedures.
"I know they will see that they are already doing everything that is essential, but this will give them the chance to see what they can do that will take them over and above what is expected so that they can prove that they are doing all they can to make Northampton a safer place.
"Northampton has a very vibrant night-time economy with well-run licensed premises that are already up to a high standard. This award will help licensees to work with their staff to take a look at the criteria and see what they can do to gain the recognition and reward to prove it."
Entrants to the competition will have to show they are taking a wider community responsibility by working to discourage binge drinking and prevent alcohol related crime.
Fears have grown in recent years about an increase in violent attacks in some of the town's drinking hotspots, often fuelled by a mind-bending cocktail of cheap alcohol.
Councillor Paul Varnsverry (Lib Dem, West Hunsbury) said: "Taking part in Best Bar None will give the public confidence that a premises is well run and takes the safety of its customers seriously.
"It is a great way to demonstrate that a premises has a responsible attitude to serving alcohol and ensuring that a night out in Northampton is safe and enjoyable."
Applications for the award close at the end of April. For more details see the website www. bestbarnone-northants.co.uk
