Kelmarsh named in garden list
A country estate in Northamptonshire has been handed a top honour by English Heritage in recognition of its beautiful parks and gardens.
Kelmarsh Hall has been included on the organisation's register of parks and gardens of special historic interest, meaning the estate is officially of "exceptional national historic significance".
The award took into account features including the remnants of a lost medieval village, through to 18th century additions such as a serpentine lake and triangular walled kitchen garden.
Head gardener at Kelmarsh, Esther McMillan, said: "It's thrilling to have the exceptional nature of Kelmarsh recognised at a national level.
"We've been renovating the garden over the last 10 years, trying to preserve the past and the spirit of its heyday, so this registering is further proof that the gardens' conservation is vital."
Tony Calladine of the Heritage Protection team at English Heritage said: "It is testament to how special the wonderful grounds at Kelmarsh are, and local people can be justly proud of this very beautiful local asset."
Visitors can visit the gardens from April 6 to September 19. For more information, call Northampton 686543.
