Jury out in rape case hearing

A jury was sent home for the night after they failed to reach a verdict on whether a 15-year-old girl was raped in Northampton.

Ismail Ahmed, aged 27, is alleged to have twice raped the schoolgirl, who cannot be named, close to Northampton town centre's Abington Square on August 2.

Northampton Crown Court has heard how she was walking home from a night out when Ahmed, who denies attacking her close to the junction of Palmerston Road and St Edmund's Road, off Wellingborough Road, approached her.

Judge Thomas Corrie sent the jury home when they did not reach conclusive verdicts after two hours' deliberation.

He said: "Come back in the morning to resume your deliberations.

"I must direct you, if you can, to put the case to the back of your minds and do not contact each other to discuss it or try to play the amateur detective. Don't look anything up off the internet or indeed any press reports."

The trial continues.
