'I'll get my skates on to help appeal'
A van driver is swapping his vehicle for roller stakes to raise money for a youngster with cerebral palsy.
Mark Horne, who delivers the Chronicle & Echo, will be skating the 14 miles from Northampton to Daventry along the back roads.
He is supporting an appeal to raise 1,000 to send six-year-old Oliver Green-Leath, who is from Daventry, to a conductive education centre in County Durham to teach him to be more independent, as well as buying him a walking frame.
The 37-year-old said: "The family have been coming up with ideas for how to raise the money so I thought I would help.
"It is a really worthwhile cause that will make a difference to a young life, so I'm urging people to sponsor me."
He added: "I deliver Chronicle & Echo newspapers to Daventry and my partner is from Daventry so we have a real link with the town."
Oliver's mother Gemma Green, aged 26, said the centre would help her son to learn to use his legs properly, move properly and support his body weight. She said: "He wasn't born with cerebral palsy, he had a brain haemorrhage when he was one. He is a very bright boy, he laughs all the time and he is hardly ever miserable. He wants to walk and run and play with the other children but he can't, it's heartbreaking."
She added: "What Mark is doing is brilliant and his girlfriend has also been fantastic with organising as well."
Mr Horne, who lives in Northampton town centre, is a keen skater with previous experience at long-distance skating, having skated from Northampton to Milton Keynes 10 years ago for charity.
He was a member of Eastbourne Skaters Association and takes part in an organised skating event every year.
Mr Horne will be leaving the Chronicle & Echo offices in Upper Mounts on Sunday, July 13, at 9am and will be skating to Daventry Country Park.
He predicted he would take about one and a half hours.
