Huge fines for firms following dad's scaffold death fall

Two companies have been fined a total of more than £100,000 following the death of a father-of-two who fell from a scaffolding tower while working on a Northampton warehouse.

Spanclad Construction, which employed Darren Handley, 36, and its pricipal contractors Westminster Building Co Ltd were fined 80,000 and 40,000 respectively with 10,000 costs each after pleading guilty to breaching safety laws at Northampton Crown Court.

Mr Handley was one of four workers employed by Spanclad to carry out the re-cladding of a warehouse on Scottish Courage's industrial estate in Duston, Northampton in October 2004.

While working on a scaffolding tower six metres up on the warehouse's asbestos roof, he was thrown to his death when he landed on the concrete floor of the loading bay below.

Mr Handley was pronounced dead upon arrival at Northampton General Hospital from severe head injuries.

Judge Charles Wide, who critised the delay in bringing the case to court, said no fine would ever compensate for the loss of a life.
