Housing scheme could be opposed
Plans to build almost 100 houses on the outskirts of Towcester are expected to get a negative reception when they are presented to councillors next month.
Members of South Northamptonshire Council's planning committee will meet next week to discuss plans to build up to 97 new homes on land close to the A43 on the northern edge of Towcester, near to Sponne School.
A final decision on whether the development should be allowed to go ahead will be made by members of the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) later in the year, but officials from the district council have suggested the development should be opposed.
In a report which will be seen by members of South Northamptonshire Council, planning officer Andrew Longbottom claimed the new houses would not blend in with those in the nearby Belle Baulk development, off Brackley Road
He said: "I consider that this council should be objecting to the application on a number of grounds.
"The proposed density of the development is too high for an edge of settlement development and the adjacent Belle Baulk development and would be out of character with the locality.
"The development of the site would also be detrimental to the character and appearance of the locality due to the extent of the built area proposed within the site."
Discussing the actual houses which would be built in the new development, he added: "The height of the proposed dwellings is inappropriate for an edge of settlement development and would be overly prominent in the landscape and would be out of character with the Belle Baulk development."
The proposed development would also include an area of public open space and allotments.
Plans to build on the site were previously submitted to the council in both 1999 and 2001.
The 2001 plans were turned down because the development would have been outside of the town.
The council's planning committee will discuss the latest scheme on Thursday, August 5.
