Help to find homes for care babies
An urgent appeal has gone out to find people in Northamptonshire who can foster vulnerable babies and toddlers following a dire shortage of carers in the county.
According to Northamptonshire County Council, more than 50 children aged from birth to three were taken into care between April and August, all of whom need short-term foster homes.
The authority wants to recruit up to 10 short-term foster carers who can look after children from newborn infants up to the age of three.
Babies and toddlers are taken into care including those whose parents have had previous children removed for child protection reasons, are unable to care for them because of drink and drug issues or who have been placed into short-term care in readiness to be put up for adoption with parental consent.
Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Andrew Grant, said the council routinely used short-term placements when it needed to react quickly to specific circumstances: "Whether it's caring for a child for a number of weeks or up to a number of years, short term carers are crucial in making sure a child has a safe, secure and caring environment during an unsettled period in their lives."
Carers need to be home full-time, have a spare bedroom, not smoke and, most importantly, have time, energy, commitment and enjoy having children in their lives. For more information call 0300 126 1009, email a&f@northamptonshire.gov.uk or visit www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/adoptionfostering.
Alternatively, an informal open evening for potential foster carers is being held next Wednesday at Britannia House in Bedford Road, Northampton, between 7pm and 9pm.
