Greenfield homes plan is thrown out
Plans to build 260 houses, an 80-bed care home and a GP surgery on the edge of Silverstone have been blocked by South Northamptonshire Council.
Proposals to develop on the greenfield site, which lies between the A413 Towcester Road and the A43 Silverstone bypass, were shelved at a meeting of the authority's planning committee on Thursday.
Planners rejected the application made by Northampton-based developers Barwood La Salle Land Ltd Partnership, because they felt the proposals did not meet the needs of the village.
In a report before the committee, planning officer Michael Warren said: "The proposed residential development, care home and doctor's surgery would constitute an unjustified and undesirable intrusion into the countryside beyond the village."
School capacity, sewage problems, flooding, traffic, and noise issues were also cited as reasons to reject the proposals.
In the report, Councillor Dermot Bambridge (Con, Silverstone) stated: "Silverstone already has a care home, which is adjacent to the proposed site for the new one.
"A recent campaign by residents narrowly managed to save the existing surgery in Silverstone, as a new larger facility has been opened in Towcester, so there appears to be no evidence to support a new medical facility in Silverstone.
"The proposals for foul drainage, as Anglian Water can take no more at the present time, appear unacceptable as the only apparent practical solution involves using tankers to remove the foul waste. This area will hopefully remain a natural open space."
After the meeting he said: "Although we are rejecting this one application, Silverstone in the last few months has had two applications for around 100 houses and the general consensus is enough is enough."
The development would increase the village size by one-third which would change its entire character, he added.
Jamie Gibbins, director of Barwood La Salle Land Ltd Partnership, said: "We now have to consider our position on whether we appeal."
