Green Man hotel hit by fire due to be rebuilt
A hotel near Silverstone, which was virtually destroyed by a fire only days before the British Grand Prix, should be restored soon.
The Premier Inn next to The Green Man pub in Syresham was hit by a serious fire at about 9.40pm on Monday, July 5.
The blaze destroyed about a third of the hotel, where staff had been gearing up for the Grand Prix, which was held less than a week later.
But plans to restore the building have now been submitted to South Northamptonshire Council.
The scheme would see 40 fire-damaged bedrooms demolished and the hotel restored to its original condition.
In plans which have been submitted to the council by hotel owners Punch, planning expert Stephen Brooker said the restored hotel would look as similar as possible to the building before the fire.
He added: "The applicants have suffered a major loss and disruption, this extends to local employees and many guests, local businesses and visitors who had booked accommodation.
"The applicants are bewildered by the need for new planning permission simply to reinstate the damage caused by fire, but accept this to be necessary.
"The proposal merely seeks to reinstate the position prior to the fire on July 5. There is no proposal to enlarge or modify the scheme."
Mr Brooker explained the fire 'effectively destroyed' an extension which was added to the hotel in 2007, as well as causing 'significant damage' to 20 rooms inside the original hotel building.
The company hopes to speed up the rebuilding process by reusing the original foundations of the hotel.
At the height of the fire, more than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze.
A total of 55 guests, including Formula 1 driver Jenson Button's mother, Simone, had to be led out of the building. It is believed the fire started in a linen storage area.
Officials from South Northamptonshire Council will consider the hotel restoration scheme over the coming months.
