Google StreetView goes live for Northampton
A snapshot of every-day life in every road in Northampton is now available to view online via Google Street View.
The internet giant photographed the town's streets last year and residents can now look at a 3D image of their house by using the new mapping software.
To protect people's privacy Google has blurred out any faces as well as numberplates of cars and there is an option for pictures to be removed if someone is unhappy about a certain image.
Some of the familiar sights that can be spotted in Northampton are a traffic warden about to hand out a ticket to a car in Mercer's Row, a golfer practising his swing at Northamptonshire County Golf Club and even the Chron's court reporter making his way back to our offices in Upper Mounts.
Google Street View now covers 95 per cent of the UK and some privacy campaigners have labelled it a "service to burglars".
A report carried out by a discount website, myvouchercodes.co.uk, found that two-thirds of the people questioned thought Street View images were "intrusive".
The company interviewed 1,317 people and 57 per cent of these described the street mapping service an 'intrusion' while 24 per cent said that they believed it was simply "a service for burglars".
However, a recent poll by YouGov revealed that almost two thirds (60 per cent) of people who had used Street View had done so to find out where they were going and to get directions and one in five (21 per cent) have already used it for house-hunting.
Ed Parsons, Google's geospatial technologist, said: "Street View takes mapping to a level not possible before.
"And with so many practical applications it's no wonder that over two thirds of people who had tried the service said they would use Street View again.
"This new imagery of so many stunning British places means it's the ideal time to start planning a trip, kick start a house-hunt or simply ensure you never arrive late to a meeting again."
