Go-ahead for new council houses
The first new council houses to be built in Northampton for more than two decades are due to be completed by 2011 after the Government agreed a grant of more than £450,000.
The scheme will see eight new houses built on a former garage site in Woodside Way, Kings Heath, which has been blighted by antisocial behaviour in the past.
Northampton Borough Council's cabinet member for housing, Councillor Sally Beardsworth (Lib Dem, Kingsthorpe) welcomed the funding move, which was announced by the Government's Housing Minister, John Healey, yesterday.
She said: "This is really great news for Northampton.
"We put in a strong case to build these new family homes in an area that really needs them.
"I'm delighted to hear it has been successful. This is part of our commitment to providing better places for people to live and this is the first time for many years that the council has been able to build new homes."
The 451,913 funding will allow the council to work with housing developers the Orbit Group, which has been operating in the Northampton area for more than 20 years, to build the family-sized homes.
The borough council was chosen by the Government as one of 47 authorities across the country to benefit from the money for new housing schemes. The location for the new homes was chosen from a list of 13.
