Girl tackles the bullies

THIS enterprising teenager from Rushden is line to win a £25,000 grant to help in the fight against bullying.

Rushden Community College student Jasmine Dilley, 13, has applied for the cash from the county council’s Youth Opportunities Fund to employ an anti-bullying worker for her school and community.

Northamptonshire County Council has been given 702,000 by the Government to allocate to young people between 13 and 19 who come up with the best ideas for youth activities in their area.

The Year 9 student applied for the funding because she believes her idea would make a difference in the community.

She was asked to give a presentation on why it would be effective to have an anti-bullying worker and was thrilled when she was told the first stage towards securing the money has been approved.

She said: “I was very pleased when I found out because I didn’t think we would get it.

“I think an anti-bullying worker would be a good idea because it is a big issue everywhere and it would give support not only to people who have been bullied, but to help those doing the bullying.

“By employing someone as an anti-bullying worker students would have someone to talk to and it would be confidential. I like doing work for the community because I want to make where we live a nicer place.

“It might not solve the problem of bullying but it may help. “

The second stage of the funding is still to be approved, but if it is given the go-ahead Jasmine will be working with Whitefriars Church youth panel to look for someone for the role.

Whitefriars youth worker Chad Chadwick, who works with Jasmine on the panel, thinks she has done a great job.

He said: “It is really important that young people’s voices are heard. If we receive the funding we will start looking for someone for the role. We have been building on our anti-bullying campaign for about five years and this is a great result.“

Headteacher Steve Dommett is also proud of Jasmine. He said: “It is brilliant because it is not only supporting students who are bullied but those who bully others. We already have a very active anti-bullying campaign and this will add to it.”
