Former police sergeant in sex attack claim
A former policeman has appeared in court over allegations that he twice sexually assaulted a teenager whilst he was a serving officer.
Nicholas Whitehead, of Broad Street, Brixworth, an ex-custody sergeant with Northamptonshire Police, appeared in the dock at Northampton Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with two indecent assaults some time between 1990 and 1993.
The court heard that the Crown Prosecution's case was that 51-year-old Whitehead had groped the teenager on two separate occasions.
Colin McGregor, prosecuting, said: "With regard to the first charge, it is alleged he had gone behind her and grabbed her breasts, she didn't say anything to him at the time and left the room.
"The second charge relates to an occasion when he allegedly came behind her and put his hand down the front of her pants and touched her genital area."
Mr McGregor said Whitehead's told the court: "An aggravating aspect of the case is that the Crown says the alleged offences happened during a time when Whitehead was a serving police officer."
Claims were raised some time after the incidents were alleged to have happened which accounts for the lack of specific dates, he said.
Whitehead, who did not enter a plea to the charges yesterday, was released on bail and the case was adjourned until next month for committal to Northampton Crown Court.
After the hearing yesterday, Northamptonshire Police said Whitehead, who previously worked on the custody desk at Wellingborough police station, had retired in July.
A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said: "Nicholas Whitehead is no longer a serving police officer. Nicholas served with Northamptonshire Police from February 1978 until July 2010 when he retired as a police sergeant."
