A former Miss Northampton has said performing in front of Gary Barlow in New York during the judges’ houses stage of X Factor was “like a dream come true.”
Nadina Knight, aged 25, of Abington, is a member of five-piece girl group Xyra, who were seen performing on top of a skyscraper in front of the Take That lead singer on an episode of the ITV1 programme shown on Sunday night.
Despite impressing Mr Barlow with their hard work and vocal harmonies, he did not choose to put them through to the live shows as he felt the band lacked a lead singer.
Miss Knight, who won Miss Northampton 2012, said: “I had such an incredible journey on X Factor and I learnt so much about music.
“It was incredible to go over to New York. I seemed like a dream come true when we walked up to perform in front of Gary Barlow and Olly Murs, standing on top of a skyscraper and there was a beautiful sunset behind them. To perform in front of two international superstars was so surreal.”
Miss Knight said she the band, which was formed in January, was planing to continue performing together and may even complete a gig in Northampton
She said: “It was great to hear Gary say that vocally there was no question about us as we pride ourselves on the work on our harmonies.
“It was really strange when he told us we had to go home as none of us really cried. Gary said he couldn’t see a lead singer of the band but that is what we love about the band.
“We can all be the lead singer and we don’t see that as a negative. I think if it had been something we had done wrong it would have been more upsetting.
“We have had overwhelming support from people who have been saying they love the band. We are 100 per cent focussed on our music and we are going to ride the wave and see where it takes us.”
Miss Knight said her proudest moment on X Factor was when Xyra were given a standing ovation when they performed Bille Jean in the boot camp stage of the competition.
