Football fan Tom is voice of reason
A teenage football fan from Brixworth could be set to follow in the footsteps of some of the nation's most famous voices as he takes his first steps towards a career in the commentary box.
Tom Knight, aged 15, of The Ashway, is one of five finalists in a commentary competition organised to find the next junior voice of football.
The Moulton Secondary School pupil and Manchester United fan, who hopes to pursue a future career in the commentary box, recorded himself commentating on a recent Aston Villa match for one minute.
Tom, a paperboy who delivers copies of the Chron six days a week, said: "I want to be a sports journalist or a commentator when I am older so it is a really good opportunity when it came up.
"It was the first time I had ever recorded myself and after I sent it in they rang and told me I was one of the final five."
On Wednesday, Tom travelled to Villa Park, home to Aston Villa, where he was then filmed as he commentated for five minutes during a reserve match.
His recording will, along with the other four finalists, be posted online for people to vote on next week.
The winner of the competition, organised by Visitbirmingham.com, will then win a media tour of Villa Park, hospitality passes and a family weekend in Birmingham.
Tom, who says Andy Gray and Martin Tyler are two of his favourite commentators, admits his only previous experience was commentating as he played on his PlayStation.
However, he says he hopes the competition will be the start of a future career in sports journalism.
He said: "To win would just be the first step to being a commentator. I think that would be the best job to have in the whole world."
