Flash mob descends on Northampton store
More than 75 people descended on a Northampton sofa store to take part in the latest internet craze.
The crowd, consisting of mostly teenagers, sat on settees at DFS, in St James Retail Park, Towcester Road, for 10 minutes starting at noon.
They were taking part in a new activity known as a "flash mob" where a large number of people congregate in a public place for a short period of time.
The gathering yesterday was organised by the Flash Mob Northampton group, which has a page on social networking website Facebook. The club said it was in the process of organising another one at a KFC restaurant.
The group had urged members to be respectful, but encouraged participants to "read a book, have a snooze, have a cuddle, do what ever you want on these top class sofas, just have fun".
Organisers also issued five rules, including forbidding people to acknowledge the staff apart from to say "stick the kettle on love" and nobody was allowed to enter the shop until noon.
Staff at the shop had been alerted to the event.
Manager Matt Hesketh said: "They have been very respectful and were no trouble. It's a shame that they did not buy any of the suites they were sat on. I suppose they couldn't have picked a comfier place."
Participant Daniel Sown, aged 19, an IT worker, of Thorplands, said: "I saw it on Facebook. People do it all over the world."
David Walsh, aged 18, of Abington, who also took part, said: "We do it for fun, we don't want to cause any trouble. I came along with three friends and we all thought it was a laugh."
Leah Coe, aged 21, of Kingsthorpe, said: "There's never anything to do, so something like this is a laugh."
