Five arrested in drugs crackdown on pubs and clubs

Five people have been arrested in a high-profile police operation in Northamptonshire in which a specialist sniffer dog was used to search for drugs in pubs and clubs.

Fourteen police officers in plain clothes and uniform, along with a drugs sniffer dog and handler, visited pubs in Daventry and Weedon to target drug use and provide a visible police presence.

As a result of the operation last Friday, four men were arrested for possession of drugs - three for possessing cocaine and one for possessing herbal cannabis.

Patrolling police also interrupted an assault in which a 14-year-old boy was injured and which resulted in a boy, also 14, being arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

All those arrested have been bailed to appear at a police station at a later date.

The operation was lead by Police Sergeant Richard Tompkins, who said: "People who were out and about in Daventry and Weedon told us they felt very reassured by seeing a large police presence in the town centre.

"Licensees were also very positive and supportive about the operation – in fact many of them asked us to do it more often.

"The cocktail of drink, drugs and a Friday night is not a good mix and we are working to stamp out drug misuse and to ensure that our towns are safe and pleasant places to socialise."
