Firm reveals 99 more jobs will be axed
Managers at a manufacturing firm in Northamptonshire have announced a further 99 jobs are to be axed, bringing the total number of workers made redundant this year to 429.
Staff at the Cummins factory in Daventry were told the news this week as the firm continues to struggle to come to terms with the impact of the global economic downturn.
The latest raft of redundancies will see 99 staff lose their jobs on May 18, in addition to 145 already set to leave on that date, and a further 185 staff made redundant earlier in the year. The cuts mean the plant will have lost more than 35 per cent of its workforce since the start of the year.
A company spokesman said: "Due to the continued reduction in Cummins' business across all key markets, particularly power generation, the company is forced to take further action to reduce headcount in our Daventry facility. Further people will now need to be released to bring production in line with the current demand."
Cummins has seen demand for its engines drop from 22 per day in the first quarter of 2009 to just 10.
Christopher Cook, head of division at the Northampton Business School at the University of Northampton, said: "What happens in an economic cycle like this is that people feel less well-off, even if they aren't, and therefore are less inclined to borrow and spend. Businesses then feel a drop in demand and start to cut back where they can.
"Cummins are reliant on businesses making capital investments. So they can find themselves suddenly going from the peak of the bubble to the bottom of the pile."
The engine manufacturer has also confirmed that it will not be taking on any apprentices in 2009. In previous years the company has taken on groups of young people from the local area to give them valuable experience and on-the-job training in high skilled engineering.
