Firefighters to use teddy bears as comfort aids
Firefighters will hand teddy bears to frightened children caught up in fires, car crashes and other emergencies, to take their mind off what is going on around them.
The stuffed animals are being provided by national charity Teddies For Loving Care, which has distributed 26,000, mainly through accident and emergency units around Northamptonshire over the last five years.
The county fire service decided it would team up with the charity on the suggestion of crew manager Kirk Douglas, whose daughter received a teddy at hospital.
He said: "It could be a road traffic accident or some sort of fire, any situation where there's a child involved who is in distress about the situation they're in.
"It gives them something to focus on and something to look after."
Teddies For Loving Care, set up in 2001, is run by Freemasons and supported by the Douglas Compton James Charitable Trust.
