Filmhouse in Northampton gets £100k towards second screen

Arts Council England is investing £100,000 in Royal & Derngate's plans to add a second cinema screen at the Errol Flynn Filmhouse.

The money will be used to buy and install essential new digital and sound equipment as part of plans to expand the cinema.

Peter Knott, area director at Arts Council England, said: “By equipping the cinema with the digital and sound equipment it needs we hope to see this investment benefit local people, as well as support the region’s creative economy.”

The second screen will offer local people more choice in broadcasts from National Theatre Live, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Metropolitan Opera and the Bolshoi, as well as a selection of mainstream releases, independent, arthouse, foreign language films and documentaries.

The Arts Council’s small capital funding programme aims to support organisations by giving them the right buildings and equipment to deliver their work, and to become more sustainable businesses.

Increased ticket sales at Errol Flynn from the addition of a second screen would be used to support future creative projects.

Martin Sutherland, chief executive of Royal & Derngate, said: “We are obviously delighted with the success of the Errol Flynn Filmhouse.

“The creation of a second screen will not only extend the offer for our current customers, but also help encourage new ones to the cinema and to Northampton.

“We are thrilled that Arts Council England is able to support the initiative, in turn helping our financial resilience and ensuring that the theatres continue to thrive.”
