Film of prostitute's true tale shown at Cannes Film Festival

The true story of a Northampton woman trapped in a life of drugs and prostitution has been turned into a short film by one of her old college friends.

Film-maker Kemal Yildirim, aged 31, met her when he was at Northampton College and produced the film, called Rose, after she asked him to turn her experiences into a story.

The 25-minute film has been shown at the Cannes Film Festival and interest has been shown in making it into a full-length film.

It has already been screened in Manchester and will be shown at a charity screening in Northampton next week. Heartbeat actor Jack Marsden appears in the film.

Mr Yildirim, from Kingsthorpe, Northampton, said: "Rose is based on a series of events that happened to a friend of mine at college.

"She went into a lifestyle of drugs and prostitution and she got trapped in it.

"She wanted me to be able to turn it into a story and highlight what happened to women in that lifestyle."

Northampton was used as a location for the film but its story is not set in the town, and if Rose is made into a feature-length project Mr Yildirim said it would be partly shot in the town.

He added: "I wanted to bring film-making to Northampton because I've based myself here.

"Even when I get funding I said I wanted to film here because it's my home town.

"Using Northampton wasn't meant in an offensive way but to highlight problems. It's just where it's based. I didn't want to highlight Northampton as this type of place.

"I've shown the film to my friend and watching it was an emotional feeling for her but at the same time she was very happy. It's managed to put a lot of demons that she had away. It's told her story in a way she couldn't tell a lot of people, and it's affected her in a positive way which is good because she was a close friend of mine."

He said his friend had escaped her former way of life and was "very happy" now.

The screening of Rose will take place at 7pm at the Picturedrome, Kettering Road, Northampton, on Thursday, January 15. Entry is 5 on the door and proceeds will go towards CAN and the Northamptonshire Rape and Incest Crisis Centre.
