ADULT shops in Northampton have enjoyed large increases in the sales of sex toys and bondage outfits as a result of the success of Fifty Shades of Grey.
The book, written by E.L James, which has sold more than two million copies in the UK, has ignited interest in erotic merchandise.
Simplypleasure.com, in Wellingborough Road, briefly sold out of the orgasm balls featured in the story of the relationship between college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and young businessmen Christian Grey.
Amy Newcombe, who works at the store, said: “We sold out of jiggly balls for two days until we had a massive restock and now sell 10 different jiggly balls.
“Whips have also been popular as well as riding crops.”
Ms Newcombe says the shop has a poster of the front cover of the book in store which encourages people who have read the story to buy some of the sex toys which feature in the text.
Private, in Regent Square, Northampton, has also enjoyed a sales boost on the back of the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey.
A worker at the shop said: “All the sex toys featured in the story have been selling really well.
“We have also sold a bit more of the bondage equipment.”
