Family room opens in memory of teenager

A new 'family room' has been opened at Northampton General Hospital in memory of a teenage girl who died in a car accident four years ago.

Mears Ashby resident Hannah Payne died in Gloucestershire in January 2006 after the Ford Ka she was driving hit a raised manhole cover and left the road.

Following her death, her family set up the Hannah Payne Memorial Trust with the aim of creating family rooms in hospitals which could be used by relatives of people who were seriously ill.

Yesterday, the first Hannah Payne Room was opened next to the accident and emergency department at Northampton General Hospital.

Hannah's brother, Julian, said the room was designed to provide a haven for people going through incredibly emotional times.

He said: "We're very pleased with the way the room has come out, it looks really nice. There's a good outdoor area and somewhere nice for people to sit so that when they're in there it's a nice environment.

"We want it to be a lasting legacy for Hannah. We hope it will be here for many years to come."

The need for the room was backed by the hospital's chief executive, Paul Forden.

He said: "We all know the hospital is a busy place and we put lots of effort and energy into making sure we have the right kit and people in place, but sometimes we can't do the things that really matter, such as creating rooms like this.

"Having this facility will help many people, so it's really welcome."

The Hannah Payne Memorial Trust raised 40,000 to create the family room.

They are now planning to open a second room on the hospital's children's ward.
