A loving tomcat was run over and killed as he cowered by the lifeless body of his sister who had been blown up by a lit firework pushed into her bottom.
The heartbroken owner of Bonnie and Buster, both aged six, has been left devastated by their deaths and has urged police to track down the “sick, evil and twisted” people behind the cruelty.
The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I have just one question for them: ‘Why? What entertainment value is there in that for them?’”
Bonnie’s body was found in the road by a mother and her daughter as they were walking in Shelley Road, Wellingborough shortly after 6pm on Saturday, November 10.
Police were alerted and immediately began knocking on people’s doors to try to identify the cat and her owner.
But just hours after the explosion, the tragedy became a double death when it was discovered that Buster, who had been standing guard over his sister’s body, had been struck by a car and killed. His body had been moved to the side of the road, away from the scene.
The pair’s owner said: “Buster was very protective of his sister. We have had them since they were kittens and they were inseparable. It looks as though he had stayed with her but had been hit by a car.
“I’m totally lost without them. The house seems so quiet. Every time I hear a noise I think it’s one of them coming through the door.
“I’m still coming to terms with it all. They were part of the family.
“I don’t think I’ll be getting another cat as long as I am living here, not when there’s people like that about. You wonder what they’ll do next.
“It was a cat this time but what’s after that? Another animal? A small child?”
Police have launched an investigation to find those responsible.
Pc Mark Jones, who is leading the probe, said: “This is an unbelievably cruel act and we are very keen to hear from anybody who has any information which will lead to the identification of the perpetrators.
“Not only was it horrific for the poor animal involved, the witnesses and owners of the cat are understandably very distressed. I urge anybody with any information to get in touch so that we can identify and deal with whoever is responsible for this horrible act.”
Anyone with information can call police on 101.
Officials from a leading national animal charity have condemned the “despicable” attack and urged anyone with information to help police.
A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “This is a despicable act of cruelty against an innocent animal and it would have suffered a very painful death. We would urge anyone who has any information about this horrible incident to contact the police.”
A Facebook page has now been set up in the cats’ memory and hundreds of people have signed up to add their tributes while lambasting those responsible for the attacks.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with the deaths.
