EXCLUSIVE: Gordon Brown tells the Chron Labour are "fighting for their lives"

Gordon Brown has said the Labour party will be 'fighting for their lives' over the next few days of the General Election campaign.

Speaking to the Chronicle & Echo during a visit to Northamptonshire at the weekend, the Prime Minister answered criticism that his party's campaign in Northampton South had been 'lacklustre' by pledging the party would battle for people's votes.

He said: "Over the next few days, we'll be out there fighting for our lives, because we believe this is a 'big choice' election.

"We'll leave no stone unturned to explain to people what we want to do for the future and for jobs and explain what the risk is under the Conservatives and other parties.

"And I think people will conclude the obvious issues are the future of the economy and public services and when they look at who's best for jobs, policing and schools, they will back Labour."

The Labour leader also singled out the party's candidate for Northampton North, Sally Keeble, for specific praise, labelling her a 'great member of parliament'.

And she said she was battling hard to win in Northampton North, adding: "The campaign has certainly not been lacklustre in Northampton North. I'm getting fantastic support from all around.

"There really is a huge amount of support out there."

Mr Brown visited the county with his wife Sarah to launch Labour's health manifesto alongside health minister, Andy Burnham.

During a 30-minute speech to almost 200 party supporters, the Prime Minister claimed cancer could be beaten "in this generation".

He said: "I believe we can beat cancer, we can beat some of the most awful diseases, and we can beat them in this generation.

"The NHS teaches us that nothing is impossible, that if you try hard for something you believe in, nothing is beyond your reach."

Discussing Northamptonshire's future, he added: "We're determined to show that the changes of the past few years are going to be built on in the next few years.

"Better schools, better jobs, and better policing and our determination that we get an economic recovery that benefits the people of this area."

He added: "We want to see new investment in education and science to help this area create jobs and opportunities for children and teenagers in the future."

The rally at the Lodge Park Technology College in Corby came to an unusual end however, with an Elvis impersonator taking over the stage from Mr Brown.

As he replaced the Prime Minister on stage, singing the King's hit 'A Little Less Conversation', Mr Brown quipped: "They say only four per cent of the people in the country now believe Elvis is alive.

"I think by the end of this election campaign only four per cent will believe the Conservatives are not a risk to the economic recovery."
