Ex-Para 'stole wartime medals'
A former soldier accused of stealing comrades' medals and having 40 detonators when police raided his Northamptonshire home has appeared in court.
Simon Rogers, aged 28, is said to have stolen the medals from soldiers at Meeanee Barracks in Colchester, who have all served in Afghanistan, and attempted to sell them on internet auction website eBay.
When military police officers raided his home in Main Street, Apethorpe, on August 27 last year, they allegedly found 25, 9mm bullets, 11 mini flares and explosive substances. Bomb experts were dispatched to the address as a precaution once the explosive devices were found.
Rogers appeared at Corby Magistrates' Court yesterday for a brief hearing when his case was sent to the crown court.
He is accused of stealing Mark Webster's operational service medal awarded for services in Iraq and is charged with taking an Afghanistan clasp medal belonging to Mr Webster between March 2008 and October 2008.
Rogers is also accused of taking medals from Robert Linsell between December 1 and December 31, 2007, and David Middleton between March and October 2008. The servicemen all served in Second Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (2 Paras).
Military police have also charged him with stealing ammunition from the Ministry of Defence as well as stealing Land Rover car parts from the Colchester barracks between December 1, 2007, and September 1, 2008.
After the early morning August raid, officers arrested Rogers and questioned him twice before charging him.
Stella Moses, prosecuting, asked for the case to be sent to crown court. Rogers, who did not enter any pleas, was given unconditional bail until June.
