Cricket fans got a shock while doing their shopping in Northampton yesterday morning - when England all-rounder Heather Knight took on a shift behind the tills.

The England player visited Waitrose stores in Kingsthorpe and Wootton to build anticipation head of England Women’s T20 game against South Africa at the County Ground on Wednesday, September 3.

Customers got the chance to meet Heather as she took on a number of different roles in store on the day.

As Waitrose is the official England team sponsor, she also handed out free tickets to the game on Wednesday.

Ms Knight said: “It was good fun actually - it’s quite hard, I’ve been on the tills and on the customer service desk.

“It’s all been about handing out the vouchers, speaking to a few people and drumming up support for next week’s game.

“Most of the people I spoke to didn’t even know the game was going on next week, so it has definitely been worthwhile.”

Wednesday’s T20 game comes during an impressive streak for the England Women’s team, which has recently taken back-to-back Ashes victories and reached the ICC World Twenty20 final in Bangladesh in April.

The team has already been in good limited-overs form this summer, securing a 2-0 victory against India in the Royal London ODI Series.

Head of marketing at Waitrose, Rupert Ellwood, said: “We’re proud to be supporting the England cricket team, including our Ashes winning Women’s team, at such an exciting time for the sport.”

Free vouchers for the event can also be obtained www.northantscricket.com/matchday/womens_t20_international.
