Eco-friendly classroom is open at last
Children, governors, trustees and parents at a village school in Northamptonshire have been celebrating the completion of a £300,000 classroom during a special ceremony.
The single storey extension at Bliss Charity School, in Nether Heyford,
in the west of the county, was finally declared open after more than six
months of construction work.
Governors, trustees and the school's friends association decided to start fundraising for extra space, after seeing pupil numbers increase by 50 over the past five years.
Head Chris Scalan said: "We needed the extra room to help manage our
class sizes because we were getting instances where some had more than
30 pupils.
"The new classroom is being used by year three and four children,
and has been constructed using an environmentally-friendly design."
Among the features are skylights and electrically-controlled windows
on the ceiling, and lights which are triggered using energy sensors.
The room also has large windows and uses energy saving light bulbs.
Pupils at the school were also able to give architects their input on making the room eco-friendly.
Mr Scalan said: "Because we are a voluntary-aided school, we had to fund-raise the cost of the works ourselves.
"We've also had our library opened out to make access easier to the facility, and installed new lighting and heating and landscaped
the grounds."
Governor Tony Clewett was invited to cut the ribbon to the classroom,
along with pupils Jessica Legge and Mia McNair, in front of guests who
were later invited to tour the eco-friendly room.
The official opening also coincided with Mr Clewett's departure from the
board of governors after more than 20 years service.
He will remain as a trustee at the school.
