Drugs raid in Headlands wakes suspected dealer
A suspected drug dealer had an early morning wake-up call after police raided a Northampton home, seizing what was believed to be morphine tablets and several hundred pounds worth of heroin wraps.
Officers swooped on the house in Upland Road, Headlands, as part of the latest Operation Guardian high impact day.
The team of specialist officers, including trained riot officers wearing protective suits, broke down the front door at around 8.30am, arresting a 38-year-old man on suspicion of dealing class A drugs.
The force's three-year-old cocker spaniel, named Luca, then helped search the house, where around 100 tablets, thought to be morphine, were discovered. Officers also had to deal with two large Bull mastiffs dogs, left untied in the garden.
Luca then led a specialist search team to what was believed to be several hundred pounds worth of heroin, hidden under a wooden facia of the semi-detached house.
Pc Nick Peters, who led the warrant, said: "The dog was jumping up signalling there was something under there.
"We thought it was hidden in a little hole but when we pulled away the wooden panelling the items just fell down.
"People are finding more and more ways to hide things but we are very pleased to have found this."
Riot officers carrying protective shields and fire extinguishers, to help deal with any potential dog attack, had earlier stormed the house.
Inspector for the north sector, Fay Tennet, said: "We had to have these specially- trained officers because of the intelligence we had gathered."
The officers were particularly concerned about the dogs at the property.
"If the dogs were at the door we may have had to use the fire extinguisher to move them back, but fortunately they were in the garden."
