Drivers confused by backwards sign
Bemused motorists could well be asking 'SO what?' after this rather baffling sign appeared on a Northampton road.
The backwards 20mph sign has appeared on Hawthorn Road, in Abington, Northampton, close to the junction of Broadway East.
It is not clear why the sign – a mirror image of the others in the area – has appeared on the road and Northamptonshire County Council is investigating how the inverted markings came to be there.
Abington resident Julian Menzies wrote to the Chron to complain about the new signage, which he condemned as "graffiti".
He said: "I am all for clear road markings but who in the last day or two is responsible for painting a 10ft by 6ft back to front '20' sign on the road at the top of Hawthorn Road in Abington at its junction with Broadway East?
"Not only that but they even managed to leave a trail of paint across Broadway East culminating in a puddle!
"No doubt this road marking will be present for years. Will the highways department be handed a fine for littering or graffitiing the urban environment in such a manner?
"Let's hope so – it's a plain waste of taxpayers' money that no-one can afford in these cash-strapped times, least of all the county council."
A trail of white paint leads from the erroneous sign onto Broadway East and around the corner, before coming to an abrupt end where it seems the road marking crew realised their machinery was leaking onto the road.
All the streets running parallel to Hawthorn Road all have supposedly identical markings to signify the 20mph limit around the Abington area, although no others have been apparently painted upside down.
A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire County Council said the authority had not been made aware of the mistake until contacted by the Chron.
She said: "We're grateful to the Chronicle & Echo for bringing this to our attention.
"We will investigate this and get to the bottom of what's happened."
