Dr Who looking forward to Northampton return
DOCTOR Who actor Matt Smith told the Chronicle & Echo he was "looking forward" to coming back to Northampton for a special visit to mark the new series of the show.
The series was officially launched in Cardiff last night and saw Smith, a former Northampton School for Boys pupil, give a press conference to the national media after his first episode as the Doctor was shown.
In the opening scenes Smith's Doctor is seen clinging onto the edge of the Tardis as it hurtles across London, before crash landing. It also deals with how he meets new companion Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan.
Speaking after the screening of The Eleventh Hour, Smith discussed the series, its guest stars and his onscreen partnership with Gillan.
He also told the Chron: "I hope the people of Northampton enjoy it. I'm proud to be in it.
"I'm looking forward to coming back for my press launch with my old school, which will be cool."
He then joked: "Apparently the man that discovered DNA is from Northampton so I feel my fame has been usurped."
Stephen Moffat, who has taken over as executive producer, then joked: "Do you get why I cast him?"
Smith, aged 27, from Great Billing, Northampton, is the 11th actor to play The Doctor, and though revealed as the new Timelord in January of last year was not seen onscreen until New Year's Day, when David Tennant's character died and regenerated into Smith.
Recalling his first day on the job, filming on a beach, Smith said: "The tide was coming in, there was torrential rain. It was a brilliant location, it was like a crater of the moon, it really was. It felt like that, anyway.
"There's this blue box in front of you and you're supposed to have a relationship with it. It was weird but thrilling and challenging and mad.
"The fan reaction has been positive. Everyone has been very kind and very generous.
"It seems like quite a generous world to get into."
