Donor egg advert helps women 'jump the queue'
Women who cannot conceive naturally are advertising for donor eggs in newspapers through a Northampton fertility clinic to get around its waiting list.
The CARE Fertility clinic in The Avenue, off Cliftonville, has placed the advert in the Chronicle & Echo today to find a donor for Diana Smith.
The 44-year-old is desperate to have a child with her husband following two failed pregnancies and has agreed for the advert to be placed because any suitable eggs donated in response will be reserved for her.
Doctors at the clinic said such personal advertising is likely to increase in response to the law change which allows people to find their natural parents, discouraging egg and sperm donors.
Dr Rahnuma Kazem, medical director at the clinic, said: "This is the first advert we've placed in two years and it indicates that waiting lists for eggs are long at the moment.
"If a woman is very keen to have a baby as soon as possible we can place an ad with a code name so we know a response is to that person. It allows the eggs to go directly to her and cut out the waiting time."
The 44-year-old, from London, has resorted to the Northampton clinic because it is one of the few which screens the embryo for defects before it is implanted in her womb, maximising the chance of a pregnancy.
She said her advancing years and the fact she has had a falopian tube removed meant she was unlikely to get pregnant naturally and wanted to start the process as quickly as possible.
She said: "My husband and I have everything we could want apart from a child. I want desperately to be a mum and I want the child to be my husband's."
