Determined pupils dig in against park vandals
A GROUP of green-fingered students whose hard work at a park was ruined by vandals returned to the area to show they will not be beaten.
Year 10 students from Rushden Community College in Hayway, planted trees and shrubs in Rose Avenue Park, Rushden, on Friday as part of the school's efforts to make improvement to the park for the community.
Groundwork North Northamptonshire community development officer Andy Corner, who helped to co-ordinated the project, said the pupils were upset that trees they had planted at the park had been ripped out but they were determined to carry on with the improvement work.
He said: "The pupils have helped to transform this park in the last couple of years.
"They've done planting there before but unfortunately last time some of their trees and shrubs were pulled out by vandals.
"The students were quite upset about what had happened but they wanted to come back to get the message across that they will keep coming back to improve the area.
"They are a motivated group of young people and it's been a pleasure to work with them."
Rushden Community College pupil Olumide Odunlami, 15, took part in the project.
He said: "I've been digging up the soil so we could plant new trees and shrubs.
"It's been hard work but we wanted to help make the park better so people will find it more friendly and will want to visit it."
Fellow student Luke Green, 14, who filmed the pupils for a media project, said: "I've been filming what everyone's doing and have done a piece on camera explaining what's happening.
"We hope to show it at school so that other people can see what we've been doing here."
The trees and shrubs the students planted were part of a batch of 450 that the school has received from Trees for Schools to plant around the town.
The project was co-ordinated by Groundwork North Northamptonshire and supported by housing association Spire Homes, the town's Whitefriars Church and the county council.
