M1 crash in Northamptonshire. January 2, 2014.

A lorry driver walked from his vehicle with only minor injures after smashing through the central reservation of the M1 motorway and crashing into a ditch on the opposite side of the road.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the motorway following the crash which happened south of Junction 16 at about 6.15am this morning.

The lorry was travelling northbound and crashed into a ditch on the southbound side. No one else was injured in the accident.

One lane of the M1 is closed in both directions while barrier repairs are made and the lorry is recovered.

Writing on his Twitter account ‏@Northants_RPU, Dave Lee said: “Long delays on the M1 folks at jct 16 due to a cross over. Recovery has just arrived on scene.

“This is one very lucky lorry driver to walk away from this.”

Electricians are also at the scene to make safe live cables which were exposed when the lorry hit three lampposts.
